Engineering Breakdown

Calm Frost Footer — A calm wellness footer built over a full bleed portrait photo, with a panel of frosted glass laid across its left side. Two lists of lowercase words fade in from a blur one after another when the footer scrolls into view, and a thin weight wordmark resolves letter by letter below them. Hover a word and its neighbours go soft while it stays sharp. A one line newsletter field sits beside the wordmark and turns into a thank you note after you subscribe. On tablet the glass widens and the form moves under the links, and on mobile the photo sits on top with feathered glass beneath, 44px tap targets and an arrow in place of the subscribe label.
Every interaction state, motion curve, and responsive edge-case has been extracted and reconstructed for seamless integration into modern React applications.
01
Zero — Primitive Dependency & Pure Standalone Pattern: pure React and scoped CSS. There is no UI primitive library, no animation library and nothing extra to install. The one outside asset is the background photo, which is a prop you point at your own licensed image.
02
Frosted Panel: a layer over the photo uses backdrop — filter with a blur and a slight saturation boost, plus a tinted gradient. It covers 58% of the width on desktop and 64% on tablet. On mobile it is full width, starts below the photo and fades in at the top with a mask.
03
Grid Areas: desktop is a five column grid with a nav, a wordmark, a form and a footer row placed in named areas. Tablet moves the form under the nav, and mobile is a single column in the order wordmark, tagline, nav, form, legal.
04
Staggered Blur Reveal: when 25% of the footer is visible, every word fades from a blur and rises 10px, 70ms after the one before. The wordmark letters start half a second later and are 90ms apart. A class on the footer triggers it, so it plays once.
05
Settled State: 1.6 seconds after the reveal, the footer drops the stagger delays so that hover feels instant. Without IntersectionObserver the reveal happens at once.
06
Hover Focus: on pointer devices, hovering a word blurs and dims the other words in the same list. This uses the :has selector, and touch screens never see it.
07
Mobile Details: the Press link, the URL and the line break in the tagline are hidden, the subscribe label becomes an arrow and the input is 16px so iOS does not zoom when it gets focus.
08
Newsletter Feedback: the browser checks the e — mail. A valid submit empties the field and swaps the label for a thank you note. Pass an onSubscribe handler to send the e—mail to your provider; returning false or throwing shows a failure note.
09
Reduced Motion: every word and letter is simply visible, with no transitions.
