Engineering Breakdown

Stencil Stretch Outro — A pitch black footer with acid yellow type and a huge stencil cut wordmark set edge to edge. On desktop every letter is its own shape and swells towards your cursor like a spring, while the whole word keeps its width and a round dot replaces the pointer. On tablet and mobile the word sits on two lines and a wave rolls through the letters when it scrolls into view, and again when you tap it. Next to a stepped bar mark sit the contact lines, a newsletter form that types out its thank you, and links that wipe in on hover. The layout changes at 1100px and 700px.
Every interaction state, motion curve, and responsive edge-case has been extracted and reconstructed for seamless integration into modern React applications.
01
Zero — Primitive Dependency & Pure Standalone Pattern: pure React and scoped CSS. The wordmark outlines are included as data, so there is no UI library, no animation package and no font file to install for the lettering.
02
Per Letter Spring: every letter has a target between 0 and 1 that follows the pointer with a Gaussian falloff. A spring (acceleration 0.05, damping 0.86) moves the letter to its target, so it settles slowly and overshoots a little before it rests.
03
Constant Width Stretch: each letter grows wider and gets a stroke in the same colour so it also looks heavier. Letters are then re — flowed by their advance widths and the whole word is scaled back, so it always spans exactly its original width.
04
No Re — renders While Moving: the letter transforms and the dot position are written straight to the SVG and the DOM on every frame. The loop stops by itself once every letter has settled.
05
Three Strengths: the stretch prop switches between Subtle, Medium and Dramatic, which change how wide and heavy the letters get and how far the pointer reaches.
06
Stencil Cut: a mask removes a 26 unit slit across the lower third of the x — height. Pass stencil as false to draw the letters whole.
07
Custom Cursor: on devices with a fine pointer a 12px dot with difference blending replaces the cursor inside the footer. It eases after the pointer and grows to 4.5 times its size over links and buttons.
08
Touch Wave: on tablet and mobile a pulse sweeps across the letters when 60% of the wordmark is visible. The second line starts 280ms after the first, and tapping the wordmark replays it.
09
Three Layouts: the footer picks desktop from 1100px, tablet from 700px and mobile below that. Each layout keeps its own newsletter state, so resizing the window does not lose a typed email.
10
Wipe Links: a yellow block wipes in from the left behind a link on hover and leaves to the right. On tablet the same fill appears while the link is pressed, and mobile rows invert while pressed.
11
Typed Thank You: after a valid submit the form is replaced by a box of the same height that types the message at 38ms per letter with a blinking block caret. It goes back to the form after resetAfterMs, which defaults to 7000 as in the demo and can be set to 0 to keep the message.
12
Subscribe Handler: pass onSubscribe to connect a real endpoint. Return false or throw to show the error message in the same box.
13
Reduced Motion: the stretch and the wave are switched off, and the thank you message appears at once.
